WCW beefs up its committee at busy AGM

WCW AGM was held in the Harbour Hotel on Fri 1st Dec at 8pm.  There were 15 members in attendance plus our guest speaker Cathal Dillane.  The Chairperson Joe Tummon  welcomed all member to the meeting  and said that the club had a very active and successful year.  The following were the main club  activities during the year.

New Members: The chairperson welcomed all new members to the club some of whom joined following our open day in the Westwood hotel. This was followed up by a number of skills sessions in the NUIG car park. The club now has a total of 55 members.

Fundraiser for Gerry. The club members raised€ 1,305 for the fundraiser for our long time member Gerry Commins who had a unfortunate accident in March 2015. The club matched the members funds and presented a cheque for €2,620 to the organising committee.

Sportives: Club members participated in many Sportives including the Tour de Conamara, Tour of the Burren, Croi Cycle, Tour of Clare, Jigsaw cycle and the M17 Sportive which saw 17 WCW members on the road. The club is pleased to be associated with three  sportives which  are registered under the clubs name , Tour de Conamara, Croi Cycle and the Jigsaw cycle.

Safety: Thankfully we had no  serious accidents this year apart from a few cuts and bruises following minor crashes. The chairperson  highlighted the need for greater safety on our roads and suggested that the local clubs should get together to address this issue by contacting  Cycling Ireland and the Road Safety Authority. There was a good discussion on this issue with suggestions that we have a safety car on each club spin . It was also suggested that we contact the county council with a view to them erecting road signs warning drivers of the presence of cyclists.  Mayo county council have already done this on a designated cycling route.

Summer Spins: Our mid week summer spins were well supported this year with a new Tuesday  spin from Roscam  being introduced.  In additional to our regular spins on Tuesday  and  Thursday  from Bushypark.  Our  year round Sunday spin continued as usual from the Kingfisher  with a new starting time of 8:30am

Club Gear: This year saw the arrival of our club gear. The club opted for Shadow brand, which also supplies Galway Tri Club. There were mixed views on it with the sizing of the Jerseys being the main issue.

Sponsors: The chairperson thanked  our three Sponsors, Oscars Restaurant, Levels Gym and Bikefit.

Overnight Trip to Leenane: One of the highlights of the year was our overnight trip to Leenane which saw  16 members participate. Gerry Commins and his son Shane were guests of the club.  Shane, 12 years old,   cycled  15k on the first day and over 40k on our trip home. A number of the group also cycled the very scenic route from Leenane to Lough Fee.

The chairperson finished up by thanking the hard working committee especially the secretary Ger Melvin. Padraic Benson then took the chair for the election of the 2018 officers and  committee. The following members were elected.
