Our annual overnight spin took place in Leenane, Connemara on Saturday October 7th. We stayed in the Leenane Hotel, http://leenanehotel.com/, one of the oldest establishments in Connemara and famous for its views and seaweed baths.
The group of 16 departed from Galway at lunchtime on Saturday and pedalled the 65km direct route to Leenane via Maam Cross and Maam. A smaller group of 5 then added on another 45km around by Killary Harbour and Lough Fee in the Renvyle – Kylemore region, bringing the day’s route up to 110km.
Dinner and a visit to Hamiltons and Gaynors in the village helped the limbs to recover and on Sunday some of the group returned home via Screeb and Spiddal. The hardier riders clocked up to 200km over the weekend with everyone well over the 100km mark.
Thanks to Joe and Bernie for the support vehicle and to Ger for tools and spare wheels which did the trick when 2 punctures hit. It was great to have Gerry with us and his son Shane who cycled 45 km from Leenane to Oughterard and led over the hill at Mam Tir na Cille in the process.
