Group Leader Course
Eight WCW club members participated in the first ever Cycling Ireland Group Leader Course to be delivered in Galway.
Every group spin should have two leaders, especially if there are new riders in the group. The role of the leader is to guide the group safely during the spin and help ensure the spin is safe, enjoyable and achievable for all.
The one day course covered the essential skills needed to lead a group safely. The skills begin before mounting the bicycle at all; getting to know all the riders in the group and their skill levels, bicycle checks, route planning and weather awareness are all essential to ensure safe and enjoyable group spins. On the road communication, hand signals and techniques to lead groups safely through junctions are all essential to ensuring the safety and comfort of all riders.
The course tutor was Kieron Selley , an experienced cyclist and instructor from Scotland now living in County Cork and very active in both road and mountain biking.
The WCW group was joined by Fidelma Ray, a Galway cyclist who completed the “Zero to 60 in 8 Weeks” course run by WCW’s Padraic Benson last year. Stephen Roche from Ballinasloe CC and Martin O Malley from Lecanvey CC also participated. These are 2 new clubs which have made great progress in the past 2 years.
Thanks to all who participated, to Roisín Hickey of CI and to Padraic Benson who arranged the training room for the course. We hope to run this course again in Galway in early 2017; the more WCW members who complete the course the better as this will improve the safely and performance levels of our spins.
